MARGARET KILANI BID the officers goodbye and shut the door behind them. She turned back to look at her family and there was horror written in her eyes. The others had heard the discussion between their mother and the officers and the entire family stared at one another. For the first time in a while, they were all confused.

“I bet he did it!” Rowan spoke first, pointing at Roman.

Roman had had it and he hit his brother right in the jaw as he stared down at him, silently defying him to make another move. Rowan said nothing as he stared back at his brother and cleaned off the blood with the back of his hand.

“Stop it!” Margaret yelled. “All of you! This is serious!”

Amanda was shaking like a leaf as she turned to face her Alpha. “You promised us you had changed.”

“Are you serious?!” Roman shouted “You think I would do this? Are you out of your mind?” He paused and looked around and it hit him that everyone’s eyes held a glint of suspicion. He glanced at Margaret. “Mother?”

“Why have you been taking so many late-night strolls, son?” she asked simply.

Roman scoffed and sank onto the chair “You really think I’ll walk into town and kill innocent town folk for no reason at all? Me? I know I have not been the best Alpha but this is twisted, even for me.” He glanced at everybody again. “I can’t believe you think I would do this.”

Amanda felt for her brother. He was the Alpha and he had changed. They had had three months of peace in this family and now this? If she was being honest, she didn’t want to think Roman did this, but the evidence seemed overwhelming. Who else would do such a thing?

It was a horrible thing to do but Roman had always been a wild card. They were the only beasts that lived in this town. The officers mentioned that the victims had scratches, bite marks, and pieces of flesh torn from their bones like the way only an animal would.

The officers had asked politely if they had any dogs or wild animals, but it was obvious from their tone that they suspected them. They were the only ones in town who didn’t blend with the rest of the town’s folks.

A sudden realization hit Roman just then. If they had decided to blend with the people of the town like he had always wanted, this wouldn’t be happening. They would not be suspects, now the whole town had eyes on them. They would be here with pitchforks anytime now!

“You all disgust me,” Roman spat.

“You didn’t answer the question, brother,’’ Rowan said, facing his Alpha squarely.

Roman stared at him and laughed. “You know, you could be the one that did this.” He turned to face the others. “It would be the perfect cover. He knows he can pin this on me and no one would ever believe me. I guess you were right, brother. Is this what you want?”

“Now, while you’re at it.
